The Fae Canis, or just Canis, are one of the four Fae races that populate the realm of Terra. They are characterized by their tall, stocky builds, long snouts, exceptional physical strength, and natural affinities towards Black magic. They are based on the real world Canis genus, and vary wildly between the three primary races of Canis.

Characteristics

Physical

Among all races of Canis, some common traits are shared. All Canis tend to be stocky in build, with a propensity towards a large muscle density. They have long snouts with short whiskers on at least the snout, and all share a fifth "dew claw" digit halfway down the outer side of both forearms. All Canis have static claws on their hands and feet.

Common

Common Canis are among the most widespread and adaptable races of Canis across Terra, but tend to congregate most densely across the continent of Roldea. They have average sized eyes with round irises and floppy ears. they have average sized noses, average size arms and legs, and short, bushy tails with a moderate fur length. They have only minor sexual dimorphism between biological males and females. The average height for biological males is 6'0" (183cm), and the average height for biological females is 5'10" (178cm).

Among all Common Canis, the average distribution of hair types has 45% of individuals with full heads of hair, 45% of individuals with tufts, and 10% of individuals with no notable head hair.

Husky

Husky Canis are densely furred Canis native to the cold climates of northern Roldea, and generally the least common race of Canis due to the limited scale of their adapted environment. They have large eyes with round irises, large, pointed ears and large noses. They have very wide arms and legs as they are common centers for fat to build for insulation, and curled tails with very long fur across the whole body. They are additionally the only Canis to have whiskers from their eyebrows, at a fairly short length like snout whiskers. They have only minor sexual dimorphism between biological males and females. The average height for biological males is 5'8" (173cm), and the average height for females is 5'5" (165cm).

Among all Husky Canis, the average distribution of hair types has 25% of individuals with full heads of hair, 70% of individuals with tufts, and 5% of individuals with no notable head hair.

Lupine

Lupine Canis are the tall and keen natives of the savannas and deserts of Gr'ahr. Due to their uniquely intense biological adaptations to the warm climates of the continent, they are not commonly seen on Roldea, especially not in the chilly northern biomes. They have small eyes with round irises, rounded, upright ears, and average sized noses. They have average sized arms and legs with short, slender tails and generally short fur across the body. They have a moderate amount of sexual dimorphism between biological males and females. The average height for biological males is 6'2" (188cm), and the average height for biological females is 5'11" (180cm).

Among all Lupine Canis, the average distribution of hair types has 25% of individuals with full heads of hair, 50% of individuals with tufts, and 25% of individuals with no notable head hair.

Mental

As a species, Canis are very steadfast and strong of will, often leaning into the territory of stubbornness and strict adherence to tradition. It is common for a Canis to value much of their self-value on physical strength and mental fortitude. Due to this, they tend to be very aggressive and territorial, with violence between Canis individuals being a common and oft unavoidable side effect of settling disputes. This mentality leads to the common appearance of a rank-and-file pack system among Canis when it comes to priority in resource allocation or reproductive privilege amongst peers. The Canis share a high level of reproductive anxiety, and especially in certain societies (such as those located on the continent of Gr'ahr), queer identities or any other beliefs that interfere with the perpetuation of the species may be seen as anywhere from disrespectful to one's bloodline, to actively equivalent to suicide.

Spiritual

The Canis are believed to be the "black" shards of the Truekin soul, and thus have a natural inclination towards Black magic. When incarnated from the Sea of Souls, they are drawn into being from purple stars. The state of the star at the time of incarnation has no bearing on race, biological or neurological condition, or genetic disorders.

According to Sin Theory, the Fae Canis are associated with the Cardinal Sin of Power.

Culture

Society

Historically, Canis-operated society has followed a warrior culture, with no one "nation" taking precedence for long before splintering into clans and factions. The most notable example of a Canis-operated organized society are The Bloody Khans, and the subsequent Empire of Gr'ahr. Driven by blood feuds and tribal wars, God-Emperor Tarik Onyx-Eyes bested the Khans of the rival clans on Gr'ahr, forcing them into submission. He was later executed under the traditional belief that failure in battle must follow in death to be honorable, and his failure to die in battle against Wolt's Entourage condemned his fledgling empire to misfortune and suffering, which is also believed by Canis historians to be the direct reason for the empire's downfall shortly after his execution. This is but one of many examples of the cutthroat warrior-like beliefs that pervade Canis-operated societies.

Canis society also has historically encouraged the practice of forcing other species into slavery. Of note are Gr'ahrian Felis, who were treated as slaves and cattle by the warrior tribes of Gr'ahr for centuries until their successful uprising at the dawn of the Bronze Age.

Religion

The Canis are not subconsciously drawn to any particular kind of religious beliefs, and are generally well adapted to the concept of religion in modern eras. However, historically on the continent of Gr'ahr, especially in the centuries leading up to and including the reign of God-Emperor Tarik Onyx-Eyes, there was a pantheistic belief in God-Kings, where clansmen of each of the major factions of The Bloody Khans worshipped their chieftain as if they were a reincarnation of a greater being. This practice would begin to fade after Tarik's execution, however, and would be all but eradicated by the dawn of the Bronze Age.
